Gyeong Hee GU
Gyeong Hee GU , alias “Grace” was born in Korea in 1978, and graduated from Seoul City University in Visual Design, and Korea textile design. She is also a certified art psychology therapist/instructor. She created and directs Grace Art Arts Corporation, giving master classes educating children in Busan, occasionally exhibiting in Busan, London, Basel and Los Angeles . In 2022 she opened her own “Grace gallery” and decided to start exhibiting more frequently her works in Korea and overseas.
An intense spiritual experience, meditation and introspection rooted in both Zen Buddhism and Christianity, drives her inspiration.
Her technique involves creating a base of up to 30 layers of paint over which she applies hundreds, a thousand fishing lines tensed and woven in the back of the canvas. She applies additional pigments on the wires, to produce a seeming interference pattern on her works. She also deposit drops of resin that evoke the morning dew depositing on the fine spider web. With time Gyeong Hee GU is moving away from canvas to experiment with metal and glass.
The fishing line is but her own portrait:
“I needed a line that looked weak but was strong, and that felt exactly like me”.
“Day by day, I face a new dawn greeted by vibrations in air and wondering thoughts. In this volatile world, I am refreshed by the very symmetry that resides in God’s creation, and in such orderliness do I desire to walk. This world bears diverse ways of life, yet through these exhibits, I wish to inspire the audiences to be transformed by the unchanging beauty found in God’s creation. “
